Myofascial trigger points, also known as trigger points, are described as hyper-irritable spots in the fascia surrounding skeletal muscle. They are associated with palpable nodules in taut bands of muscle fibres. Trigger points are generally painful on compression and can give rise to referred pain and/or tenderness. These trigger points can be alleviated with the use of acupuncture needles or dry-needling to stimulate a local twitch response.
Dry-needling of these myofascial trigger points via mechanical stimulation causes an analgesic effect. This mechanical stimulation causes a local twitch response. A local twitch response is an involuntary spinal cord reflex contraction of the muscle fibres in a taut band. Triggering a local twitch response has been shown to reduce the concentration of ‘pain causing’ substances in the chemical environment near myofascial trigger points.
Benefits of Myofascial Dry Needling may include:
restoring muscle activation and strength
increase range of motion
decrease in localised pain
accelerating the bodies natural healing process in tendon repair
causing less pain than in manual trigger point release
